If you have ever thought, man, I am just not good at taking supplements, this episode is for you, because we're going to talk about what questions I want you to ask yourself as you put together your supplement plan so that you can actually be effective at completing it and make sure that you are taking the supplements that will be helpful for you in getting you closer to your consistent period goals or your regular easy digestion goals. Thank you for listening to this episode of I'm Hormonal. I'm your host, bridget Walton, women's Hormone Coach, and, as always, I'm putting together these episodes for you because I hear a lot of the same ideas from clients that I work with or other women that I talk to, and one that keeps coming up is, like I talked about earlier this week, one man I'm just really taking all the supplements. I don't know why it's not fixing my problem. Well, listen to the earlier episode this week if that feels like you, because I talked a little bit more about why supplements shouldn't be the tool that you are leaning on 100%. We'll get into that a little bit more about why supplements shouldn't be the tool that you are leaning on 100%. We'll get into that a little bit more here in a second help you make a plan. The second thing that I hear all the time is like Bridget, I have just never been consistent at taking supplements. It's not something that I feel like I'm good at, so we are going to get ahead of that and say, okay, how can we put in more of a foolproof plan so that you can get the most out of your supplements when you are taking the ones that are right for you?
Speaker 1:So first let's talk about three questions that you can ask yourself as you are selecting a supplement. First question I want you to ask yourself is supplement? First question I want you to ask yourself is why am I taking this supplement and what am I expecting out of it? It might seem obvious, but this is actually a really good reflection question to ask. I even ask myself this sometimes, where I'm like, oh, let me take some CoQ10 because I know that's like good for a thing. But then I take a step back and I say, okay, what is my specific health goal that is driving me to take this thing, and what is the change that I'm expecting, that I'm hoping to see once I take it? Because those two questions, taken a beat to think logically about it will help you make sure that you are A picking the right tool that can suit you and, b you know what you want to look for as far as changes go. So you know like, okay, should I do this again? Should I get another bottle? Did this help me at all or did this make no change? So that's the first question I want you to ask yourself.
Speaker 1:The second question that you can ask yourself is what can I do with nutrition to support this same goal or expectation? So, if your goal in the first part of this first question was to maybe support more stable blood sugar levels, great. The second question here what can I do related to nutrition to support this goal. Well, let me put in place some blood sugar supporting tools. This is because, like I mentioned earlier, you don't want to be only relying on supplements. Supplements can be very helpful tools, but you also need to be making the diet and lifestyle changes that will help you to accomplish your goals. It's gonna be a lifestyle shift. That doesn't mean that it has to be hard, but those are the things that will also help you to move the needle.
Speaker 1:The third question that I want you to ask yourself is this what information made me believe that my body, that my health, needs this supplement? Okay, what information or what source made me believe that I need this particular supplement to support my health goals? Of course, there are many well-intentioned manufacturers or other businesses out there selling supplements. That can be the case, and it can also be the case that some companies' branding and marketing look so good and juicy and I'm like I want to be a part of that culture or I want to have the same experience that I see other people having with it. Now I think it's just a good opportunity to take a step back and say, outside of, what this specific company or brand or manufacturer is saying about this product, what are other people saying about this vitamin or mineral or adaptogen? What are they saying about this particular probiotic? Just getting that layer deeper about why do I think that I need this in the first place? Because that will also help inform? Okay, is this think that I need this in the first place because that will also help inform? Okay, is this something that I really need or is this just the first thing that you know? Chat chippy tea recommended to me and so I'm just like, okay, let me try this quick win here now.
Speaker 1:In my work with my one-on-one clients, we are almost always incorporating supplements in a strategic and targeted way to get the client closer to her hormone and digestive goals. That being said, one of the reasons why my clients can be so effective in taking their supplements regularly is because we create a very clear and time-bound plan for them to take these supplements. It's not something where I'm like, hey, yeah, take this supplement indefinitely. It's not something where it's like, oh well, yeah, just take this, you know, until I don't know, until you feel different. Right, we're creating a specific plan to say, you need to take this at x, y, z times of day or times in the week. You are going to be taking it for four weeks or six weeks or 12 weeks, however that best suits their individual goals and their individual body, and when you have that type of structure around a plan, that's really going to increase your likelihood of completing it. It also doesn't hurt that, of course, I'm going to be asking them each week or every other week when we talk in our live sessions about how it's going, how they're doing with their consistency. So that accountability structure also has its little bit of magic that it adds to. But something that you can do at home by yourself is create this plan for yourself.
Speaker 1:Don't make taking magnesium an indefinite thing. Say, okay, what is the outcome, what is the change that I'm expecting from this, and how long am I going to do this for, and then you can reassess to see if it's something that you do want to continue on with. The last note that I want to leave you with for today is on more of a mindset topic, because, again, I hear women all the time saying I just can never be consistent with no-transcript. Sure, if you continue to say that, if you continue to tell yourself that you aren't good with supplements, then you will continue to prove yourself right. So language is important. The way that you talk to yourself is important and is powerful. If you want to be consistent with supplements because you know what you expect from it, you know why you're taking it, you know how it can help you have more consistent periods, have less painful periods, have less PMS, then you are going to commit to it and the way that you talk to yourself is important and that's something that you can change for free with very little barrier to entry right now. So don't underestimate how important that is.
Speaker 1:That is really all I've got for you today in this mini episode. This is exactly the kind of intentional planning that I go through with my one-on-one clients, and it's something I'm going to be talking more about in my upcoming free training, that is, on September 23rd.
